Lead Generation in the USA: Local Business Leads, City by City

Lead generation in the USA, city by city: split big metros into areas, collect published contact details, and follow the US rules for email and texts.

Lead generation in the USA has one big challenge: local business leads are everywhere, and a big metro area is far too large to cover with one search. The way through is to work city by city and area by area, with a clear target and a clean list. This guide shows how to split US metros into searchable areas, what to collect, how to handle time zones, and the basic US rules for business email and texts.

The short answer

  1. Choose one niche and one metro area, ideally in a single time zone.
  2. Split the metro into its separate cities and neighbourhoods, then search each one.
  3. Collect the name, address with suite number, phone, website, email and rating.
  4. Store numbers in +1 format and remove duplicates, especially chains and franchises.
  5. Follow the federal rules for commercial email, and get written consent before automated marketing texts.

Why the USA needs a city-by-city approach

A US "city" is often many cities. The Los Angeles area includes Santa Monica, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Long Beach, each a separate city with its own business districts. Dallas-Fort Worth spreads across Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, Arlington and Frisco. A single search for "plumbers in Los Angeles" shows the best-known names and misses most of the rest.

So treat each metro as a list of smaller places:

Metro Split it into Notes
New York City The five boroughs, then neighbourhoods such as Midtown, the Financial District, Williamsburg, Long Island City Very dense; many offices sit inside tall buildings
Los Angeles Separate cities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Glendale, Long Beach, plus Downtown, Koreatown, Westwood Spread out; drive time matters for visits
Chicago The Loop, River North, West Loop, plus suburbs such as Schaumburg, Naperville, Oak Brook Many offices sit in the suburbs
Houston Downtown, Uptown and the Galleria area, the Energy Corridor, Westchase Energy services cluster on the west side
Dallas-Fort Worth Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, Arlington, Frisco Many company offices are in the northern suburbs
Phoenix Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler Most of Arizona does not change its clocks in summer
Miami Brickell, Downtown, Doral, Coral Gables, Wynwood Doral holds many logistics and trading firms

The same idea works for smaller cities: split by neighbourhood, by business district, or by ZIP code if the city has few named areas.

Lead generation in the USA, step by step

  1. Write your target. For example: "Independent HVAC contractors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with a website and at least 20 reviews."
  2. List the places. Write down the separate cities and neighbourhoods of the metro, starting where your buyers are densest.
  3. Search each place. In dense downtowns, search block by block or building by building; one search per neighbourhood is not enough there.
  4. Collect published contact details. Check the website footer, contact page, about page and the business's Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages for emails and phone numbers.
  5. Keep the suite number. US office addresses often share a street address with dozens of other firms; the suite number tells them apart.
  6. Store numbers in +1 format. US numbers have 10 digits after the +1 country code. A consistent format makes duplicates easy to find.
  7. Remove duplicates. Chains and franchises appear in every suburb. Decide whether you sell to the head office or each location, then keep one row per location and match on phone and website.
  8. Qualify and split. Sort by reviews, rating and website, then split by city and time zone.

Say you split Phoenix into five cities and each one gives you 80 roofing companies. That is 400 leads before duplicates, and each one is a business that actually serves your target area.

Time zones and timing

The mainland USA has four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific, plus separate zones for Alaska and Hawaii. Most of the country moves its clocks forward in summer; most of Arizona does not.

  • From the UK. New York is usually 5 hours behind London. A 3 pm London call is 10 am in New York and 7 am in Los Angeles.
  • From the Gulf. Dubai is 8 or 9 hours ahead of New York, depending on the season. Late afternoon and evening in Dubai is morning on the US East Coast.
  • Holidays. Avoid Thanksgiving week (the fourth Thursday of November), the days around 4 July, the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and the last week of December.
  • Style. US buyers tend to like short, specific messages with a clear question and a clear next step. A local reference (their city, their street, their reviews) shows you did your homework.

US rules for business email and texts

Email. Federal rules for commercial email cover B2B email too. Every message needs honest "From" details and an honest subject line, your physical postal address, and a working opt-out that you honour within 10 business days. The FTC enforces these rules and explains them on the FTC website.

Calls and texts. The TCPA covers calls and text messages to phones. Get written consent before you send automated marketing texts, and take care with automated calls. Some states add their own rules on calls and texts, so check the rules for each state you target.

Practical habits. Keep a suppression list of everyone who opted out, across all your lists. Record where each contact detail came from. Do not buy lists of mobile numbers for texting.

This is general information, not legal advice; check the current rules for the country you send to.

Where Rovero fits

Rovero is Windows software that does the place-by-place search for you. You type a business type in your own words and a city in any country, including any US city. Rovero shows the city's areas and neighbourhoods; you tick the ones you want and it searches them one by one. Big cities are well mapped; smaller towns may have few named areas, and you can add your own.

In dense downtowns, Deep sweep uses an adaptive grid that drills down to cells of about 300 m where listings are dense, so busy areas are covered block by block. Tower Dig searches inside office towers and business centres. Each lead comes with the address, phone numbers, website, rating and reviews, plus the emails and mobile numbers the business publishes. Every business is checked against everything you already saved, so franchise locations found in two suburbs are not added twice.

A big metro can take hours; a few areas take minutes. Rovero works in the background and picks up where it stopped if Chrome or the PC restarts. It finds businesses, not people: no job titles or decision-maker names.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a list of local businesses by city?

You can build one by hand from public business listings, chamber of commerce member lists and the businesses' own websites, area by area. Bought lists exist too, but check how fresh they are and where the data came from. Software such as Rovero automates the area-by-area search.

Yes, commercial email to businesses is allowed under federal law, as long as you follow its rules: honest headers and subject line, your physical postal address, and a working opt-out honoured within 10 business days. Other laws can apply to specific sectors, so check yours.

Can I text US businesses I find online?

Take care. The TCPA covers texts to phones, and you need written consent before sending automated marketing texts. Email or a phone call to the business's published line is the better first contact.

How do I find local business leads by ZIP code?

Split your target city into ZIP codes, search your business type in each one, and record which ZIP codes you have finished. It works best for cities and suburbs with few named neighbourhoods.
