Contractor Leads: Find Builders, Plumbers and Electricians

Contractor leads in any city: build lists of builders, plumbers and electricians in the UK, USA or the Gulf, and see how contractors can win B2B work too.

"Contractor leads" means two different things: a list of contractors (builders, plumbers, electricians) to sell to, or work for contractors. This guide is mainly for the first group: building merchants, tool hire firms, van leasing, insurance brokers, accountants, software vendors and workwear suppliers who need a clean list of trade businesses in a city. There is also a section for contractors who want commercial clients, because the same method finds construction leads for them too.

The short answer

  1. Choose the trades you sell to, and the words each trade uses to describe itself.
  2. Search area by area, including industrial areas and trading estates.
  3. Collect the phone numbers, emails and websites the businesses publish.
  4. Filter by distance from your branch, reviews and whether there is a website or email.
  5. Call first: most tradespeople answer the phone faster than they answer email.

Who sells to contractors?

Trades buy a lot, often in small amounts and often. Typical sellers include:

  • Building and plumbing merchants, electrical wholesalers and tool hire firms
  • Van leasing, fuel cards and vehicle tracking
  • Insurance brokers and accountants who know the trades
  • Job management, quoting and invoicing software
  • Workwear, PPE and safety training
  • Marketing agencies that build websites for small firms

Say you run a tool hire depot in Salford. Your best customers are builders, plumbers and electricians within a short drive of the depot. A national list is no use to you. A list of trade businesses within a few miles, with mobile numbers, is.

Which search words find plumber leads, electrician leads and more?

Trades describe themselves in many ways, and the words change by country. Search with several.

Trade Search words to try Regional note
General builders builder, building contractor, construction company In the Gulf also try contracting company
Plumbers plumber, plumbing services, heating engineer UK gas work needs Gas Safe registration
Electricians electrician, electrical contractor US licensing rules vary by state
MEP and HVAC MEP contractor, HVAC contractor, AC repair AC maintenance is year-round demand in the Gulf
Fit-out and joinery fit-out company, joinery, carpenter Dubai and Riyadh have many in industrial areas
Finishing trades painter and decorator, tiler, plasterer Many are sole traders working from home
Outdoor trades roofer, landscaping company, swimming pool contractor Pool and landscaping firms follow villa communities

Where do contractors have their businesses?

Trade businesses are not spread evenly, and many do not sit where their customers are.

  • Gulf. Contracting and fit-out companies cluster in industrial areas: Al Quoz, Ras Al Khor and Dubai Investments Park in Dubai, Mussafah in Abu Dhabi, the industrial areas of Sharjah, and the industrial cities of Riyadh. Smaller maintenance firms sit in older commercial districts such as Deira and Al Karama.
  • UK. Many trades work from home or from units on trading estates. A listing's address may be a home address in a suburb, which matters for the rules below.
  • USA. Contractors are spread across every suburb, and many list a service area instead of an office. Search town by town and suburb by suburb, not just the city.

How to build a contractor list, step by step

  1. Draw your area. Decide how far from your branch or depot you will deliver or visit. That is your map.
  2. List the areas inside it. Include the industrial areas and trading estates, not only the town centres.
  3. Run one search per trade and area. "Plumber in Stretford", "electrician in Eccles", and so on. Big city searches show mostly the largest firms.
  4. Collect the published contact details. Trades often publish a mobile on their website, Facebook page or van livery, and a general email if they have a website.
  5. Remove repeats. One electrician may appear under "electrician" and "electrical contractor". Keep one row per business.
  6. Sort by fit. Put businesses with a website and many reviews first; they are established and buy regularly. Put one-person firms with no website in a separate list for a phone call.
  7. Export a phone list and an email list. Most of your first contact will be by phone. See how to build a cold calling list for the calling side.

How to qualify contractor leads

Not every trade business is a good lead. These signals help you rank them:

  • Distance. Close businesses can visit your counter. Far ones need delivery.
  • Website. A firm with a website usually has an office, an email and a bigger budget.
  • Review count. Many reviews usually means many jobs, so more materials, tools and vans.
  • Rating. A low rating with many reviews may mean an owner who would welcome help with quality or marketing.
  • Claimed or unclaimed listing. An unclaimed listing often means nobody manages the firm's online presence, which is a lead for marketing agencies.

If you are the contractor: find commercial clients

If you are a contractor looking for work, there is a B2B route too. Rovero lists businesses, not homeowners, so it will not find people planning a new kitchen. It will find the businesses that hire contractors again and again:

  • Property management and facility management companies
  • Real estate agencies that manage rentals
  • Restaurants, cafes and shops that need fit-out and maintenance
  • Clinics, schools and gyms with ongoing repair needs

Say you run an AC maintenance firm in Sharjah. A list of property management companies, clinics and restaurants in your areas, each called with a clear offer for an annual maintenance contract, is worth more than any one-off job.

Good practice and local rules

Timing. Tradespeople start early. Call before they go on site or at the end of the working day. In the Gulf summer, outdoor work pauses in the middle of the day for the midday break, which can be a good time to reach a site manager. The UAE weekend is Saturday and Sunday (since 2022); the Saudi weekend is Friday and Saturday; the UK and USA use Saturday and Sunday.

UK. Many tradespeople are sole traders. Under PECR, sole traders need consent (or a valid soft opt-in) before you send them marketing email or messages. Limited companies and LLPs can receive B2B marketing email without prior consent, as long as every message identifies you and carries a working opt-out. UK GDPR applies to named people's data, and a sole trader's mobile is usually personal data.

USA. The federal law on commercial email, enforced by the FTC, expects honest headers and subject lines, a physical postal address and an opt-out honoured within 10 business days. The TCPA covers calls and texts to phones; get written consent before automated marketing texts.

UAE and Saudi Arabia. UAE rules (the TDRA rules on marketing messages and the PDPL, Federal Decree-Law 45 of 2021) expect clear consent for marketing messages, sender identity and a free opt-out. Saudi Arabia's PDPL requires prior consent for marketing messages and an easy way to withdraw it.

This is general information, not legal advice; check the current rules for the country you send to.

Where Rovero fits

Rovero is B2B lead generation software for Windows. You type a trade in your own words ("plumber", "fit-out company", "HVAC contractor") and a city in any country, tick the areas, and Rovero searches them one by one. It visits each business's website, contact and about pages and its social pages, and keeps up to 3 emails and 5 extra mobile numbers per lead.

Smart filters cover exactly the qualifying signals above: distance, rating, reviews, has website, has phone, has email, claimed or unclaimed listing, and hide closed businesses. You export exactly what you see, as Excel, CSV or a phone list ready to copy, and each business is checked against everything you already saved, so a plumber found in two searches appears once.

Rovero finds trade businesses and the contact details they publish. It does not find homeowner jobs and does not give you people's names or job titles.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get contractor leads?

If you want jobs from homeowners, you need a lead marketplace or your own advertising. If you want a list of contractors to sell to, build it yourself, area by area, from public business listings and the firms' own websites and social pages. A list you build is fresher than one you buy.

How do I find plumbers in my area with phone numbers?

Search "plumber" and "heating engineer" in each area around you, then collect the numbers each firm publishes on its listing, website and social pages. Many plumbers publish a mobile number rather than an email, so plan to call.

Do builders and tradespeople reply to cold email?

Some do, especially larger firms with an office. Most small trades respond better to a short phone call at the start or end of the day. Use email as a follow-up with your price list.

Can I email UK tradespeople?

If the business is a limited company or LLP, B2B marketing email is allowed without prior consent, with a clear sender and a working opt-out. Sole traders need consent or a valid soft opt-in. Many tradespeople are sole traders, so check before you add them to an email campaign.
