How to Send a WhatsApp Message Without Saving the Number

You can send a WhatsApp message without saving the number in your contacts, and it takes less than a minute. The most reliable way is WhatsApp click to chat: a wa.me link that works on any phone and on a PC. This guide shows four methods step by step, the right number format for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the UK and the USA, how to put a ready-made message inside the link, and how to fix a link that does not open.

The short answer

Open your phone's browser and type https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format, digits only: no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes and no leading zero. For example, the UAE mobile number 050 123 4567 becomes https://wa.me/971501234567. Open the link, tap the button to continue to the chat, and WhatsApp opens a chat with that number. Nothing is added to your contacts.

How to send a WhatsApp message without saving the number

There are four ways to do it, and the first one works on every phone and computer.

Method 1: a wa.me link (WhatsApp click to chat)

1. Write down the full number, including the country code.
2. Remove the plus sign, spaces, brackets and dashes.
3. Remove the 0 that local numbers often start with, so 050 becomes 50 after the country code.
4. Put the digits after https://wa.me/.
5. Open the link in your phone's browser, or paste it into any chat and tap it.
6. Tap the button to continue to the chat. WhatsApp opens with that number, ready for your message.

These are example numbers. Qatar and Kuwait numbers have no leading zero to drop, and US numbers simply get a 1 in front.

Add a ready-made message to the link

A click to chat link can also carry the first message. Add ?text= and the message, with spaces written as %20:

When the link opens, the message is already typed in the chat box, and the person can change it before pressing send. Businesses use this for buttons on their website and for printed QR codes. Say you sell office coffee machines in Business Bay: a website button that opens a chat with "Hi, I would like to try your coffee machine in our office" tells you exactly where the enquiry came from.

A few characters need a short code inside a link:

• a space is %20
• a comma is %2C
• a question mark is %3F
• an ampersand (&) is %26
• a new line is %0A

Method 2: search for the number in a new chat

On recent versions of the WhatsApp app, at the time of writing (October 2026), you can type a phone number straight into the search box of a new chat:

1. Open WhatsApp and tap the new chat button.
2. Type the full number with the country code.
3. If the number uses WhatsApp, it appears with an option to chat. Tap it and write your message.

If your app does not offer this, update it or use a wa.me link.

Method 3: send the number to yourself

WhatsApp has a chat with yourself: your own name, marked "You", near the top of the list when you start a new chat.

1. Paste or type the number, with the country code, into that chat and send it.
2. Tap the number inside the message.
3. Choose the option to chat with that number.

This is handy when someone sends you a number by e-mail or text and you want to message it straight away.

Method 4: on a PC with WhatsApp Web or the desktop app

1. Type the wa.me link into your computer's browser.
2. On the page that opens, choose to continue to the chat.
3. Pick the WhatsApp desktop app, or WhatsApp Web in the browser.
4. The chat opens, linked to the phone you already use.

This is the quickest method when you work from a spreadsheet. If the clean numbers sit in column A, this formula builds a link in column B that you can click:

When the link does not work

Using click to chat for your business

The best way to start a WhatsApp conversation is to let the customer write first. Put a wa.me link on your website, in your e-mail signature and on your social profiles, and print it as a QR code on flyers, menus and the shop counter. A customer who taps it has chosen to talk to you, and that is exactly the kind of contact you want to keep.

When you write to someone who has not saved your number, they see an unknown number. Introduce yourself in the first line: your name, your business and why you are writing. In the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf, a polite greeting before the business point is normal, and many customers are happy in English or Arabic, so answer in the language they use with you. In the UK and the USA, get to the point quickly.

Good practice and local rules

Replying to one person who asked you to get in touch is ordinary business. Marketing messages are different, and the rules expect permission. In the UAE, the TDRA rules and the PDPL (Federal Decree-Law 45 of 2021) expect clear consent for marketing messages, your business name and a free way to opt out. Saudi Arabia's PDPL requires prior consent and an easy way to withdraw it. In the UK, PECR treats WhatsApp messages like e-mail, and in the USA you should get written consent before automated marketing texts.
