Lead generation in Canada works city by city: you split Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary into its business areas, search each one for your type of business, and collect the phone number and email each company publishes. The country is wide and its cities are spread out, so the area list matters more than the city name. This guide gives the areas for the four big cities and Ottawa, explains what changes in French-speaking Quebec, shows how to format +1 numbers, and sets out CASL and the National Do Not Call List in plain words.

## The short answer

1. Choose one business type and one city, then list its business areas and suburbs.
2. Search each area, including the suburbs where many head offices sit.
3. Collect the published phone, email, website and suite number.
4. Store numbers as +1 and ten digits, and remove duplicates across suburbs.
5. In Quebec, write in French or in both languages.
6. Under CASL, send commercial messages only with consent or to a clearly published business address, identify yourself, and include an unsubscribe.

## Which areas should you search in each Canadian city?

| City | Areas to search | What you find there |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Toronto | Financial District, Liberty Village, Yorkville, North York, Mississauga, Markham, Vaughan | Banks, law and accounting firms downtown; agencies and tech in Liberty Village; head offices, logistics and manufacturing in Mississauga; tech and trading companies in Markham |
| Vancouver | Downtown (Coal Harbour, Yaletown, Gastown), Burnaby (Metrotown), Richmond, Surrey | Professional firms and tech downtown; offices and retail in Burnaby; logistics, trading and the airport cluster in Richmond |
| Montreal | Downtown (Centre-ville), Plateau-Mont-Royal, Mile End, Old Montreal, Laval, Saint-Laurent | Head offices downtown; creative and tech firms in the Plateau and Mile End; manufacturing and aerospace in Saint-Laurent; retail and services in Laval |
| Calgary | Downtown, Beltline, Quarry Park, the northeast industrial area | Energy and engineering firms downtown; agencies, restaurants and clinics in the Beltline; logistics in the northeast |
| Ottawa | Downtown, ByWard Market, Kanata | Government suppliers and law firms downtown; technology companies in Kanata |

Each of the big three is really a region. The Greater Toronto Area includes Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan as separate cities; Metro Vancouver includes Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey; Greater Montreal includes Laval and Longueuil. Many of the companies you want have their head office in these suburbs, not downtown.

## What is different about Montreal and Quebec?

Quebec's language of business is French. A business in Montreal may answer an English email, but French is expected, and Quebec has its own law that requires businesses to serve customers and present themselves in French. Three practical points:

- **Write in French, or bilingually.** A short French message with an English version below it is common and well received. Have a French speaker check it; a machine translation of a sales message reads badly.
- **Expect French websites.** The contact page may say "Nous joindre" or "Contactez-nous", the email may be info@ or "renseignements@", and the company name may end in "inc." or "ltée".
- **Laval is its own city.** It sits north of Montreal across the river, with its own business parks. Search it as a separate area.

Downtown Montreal and Old Montreal are compact and walkable; the Plateau and Mile End hold small creative and tech firms in converted buildings; Saint-Laurent holds the aerospace and manufacturing cluster near the airport.

## Lead generation in Canada, step by step

1. **Write the target.** For example: "Independent dental clinics in Mississauga and Markham with a website."
2. **List the areas.** Use the table above, then add the suburbs where your buyers cluster.
3. **Search each area.** Record the name, the address with its suite number, phone, website, rating and reviews.
4. **Open the website and social pages.** Copy the published email and any extra numbers, and note the page they came from. In Quebec, record whether the site is in French, English or both.
5. **Format the numbers.** Canadian numbers have ten digits after +1. Toronto uses 416, 647 and 437, its suburbs 905 and 289; Vancouver 604 and 778; Montreal 514 and 438; Calgary 403 and 587; Ottawa 613. Mobiles and landlines share the same codes, so you cannot tell them apart from the number alone.
6. **Remove duplicates.** A chain with branches in five suburbs is five rows if you sell to branches and one row if you sell to the head office. Match on phone, website and email.
7. **Qualify and batch.** Filter by website, email and reviews; split by city and time zone.

Say you sell IT support to law firms in Toronto. The Financial District, Yorkville, North York and Mississauga might give you 350 firms. Perhaps 300 publish a general email and 40 of those also publish a partner's direct address on the team page. You email the 300 general addresses with a message that names the firm and its area, and call the 50 with no email. Our guide to [how to build a B2B lead list](/blog/how-to-build-a-b2b-lead-list) covers the spreadsheet set-up.

## Time zones and timing in Canada

Canada has six time zones, from Pacific in Vancouver to Newfoundland in the far east. Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are on Eastern time, Calgary on Mountain time, Vancouver on Pacific time. Most of the country moves its clocks in summer; most of Saskatchewan does not.

- **From the UK.** Toronto is usually five hours behind London, Vancouver eight hours behind.
- **From the Gulf.** Dubai is eight or nine hours ahead of Toronto, so a Toronto morning is a Dubai late afternoon.
- **Holidays.** Canada Day (1 July), Labour Day (the first Monday of September), Thanksgiving (the second Monday of October), and the last two weeks of December. In Quebec, many construction and manufacturing firms close for two weeks in late July, and 24 June is the provincial holiday.
- **Style.** Canadian buyers like a polite, direct message that says why you chose their company. A local reference (their suburb, a review, a recent project) shows you looked.

## What rules apply? CASL and the Do Not Call List

- **CASL** is Canada's law on commercial electronic messages: email, text and messages on social platforms. You need consent to send one. Consent can be express (the person agreed) or implied, and implied consent includes an existing business relationship and the case where a person has conspicuously published their business email without a note refusing unsolicited messages, provided your message relates to their business role. Every message must identify you, give a way to contact you, and include an unsubscribe that takes effect within ten business days. Keep a record of where each address came from and your basis for sending.
- **The National Do Not Call List** covers telemarketing calls to consumers. Business-to-business calls are treated differently, but check the rules before a calling campaign and keep your own do-not-call list of anyone who asks.
- **Privacy law.** PIPEDA, the federal privacy law, with provincial equivalents in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia, covers personal data. Business contact details used for business purposes carry lighter duties, but keep only what you need and delete on request.

This is general information, not legal advice; check the current rules for the country you send to.

## Where Rovero fits

Rovero is B2B lead generation software for Windows. Type a business type in your own words and a city such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary, and it shows the city's [areas and suburbs](/rovero/features#city-area-lists); tick the ones you want and it searches them one by one, including the suburbs where head offices sit.

For each business it looks at the website's homepage, contact and about pages and the Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages, and records up to three emails and five extra mobile numbers the business publishes; it never guesses an address. Every business is compared with everything already saved, so a chain found in Mississauga and again in Markham is stored once per branch, never twice. You can export to Excel or CSV, or [send each lead to your CRM](/rovero/features#crm-webhook) as it is found.

One honest limit: Rovero records the contact details a business publishes today; it does not record consent, so the CASL record of why you may email each address is yours to keep.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I start lead generation in Canada?

Choose one business type and one city, split the city into its areas and suburbs, and search each one. Collect the published phone, email and website, store numbers as +1 and ten digits, and remove duplicates. Then write a short message that names the company's area and follow CASL.

### Where can I find business leads in Toronto?

The Financial District, Liberty Village, Yorkville and North York inside the city, and Mississauga, Markham, Vaughan and Brampton around it. Search each separately; a single search for "Toronto" misses most of the suburbs, where many head offices are.

### Can I send cold emails to Canadian businesses?

CASL requires consent, but implied consent covers a business email that the company has conspicuously published, as long as your message relates to its business and there is no note refusing unsolicited messages. Identify yourself and include a working unsubscribe. This is general information, not legal advice.

### Should I write in French to Montreal businesses?

Yes, or at least bilingually. French is the language of business in Quebec, and a French message checked by a French speaker gets a better reception. Businesses in Laval and the rest of the province are the same.

### Are B2B leads in Canada different from the USA?

The method is the same, but the rules are stricter: CASL requires consent for commercial messages, where the US federal rules allow email with an opt-out. Quebec adds the French language. Our guide to [lead generation in the USA](/blog/lead-generation-usa) covers the US side.
