A business telemarketing list is a list of companies with the phone number that reaches the person who answers for them, plus what a caller needs to open the call: business type, area and website. Business telemarketing lists work when the numbers are current, the businesses fit your offer and each caller works one area at a time. This guide covers the columns the list needs, where the numbers come from, how to tell a landline from a mobile in the main markets, the calling rules in general words, and how to work the list in call blocks.

## The short answer

1. Decide who you call: one business type, a few areas and one role, such as the owner.
2. Build the list with one business per row and the columns in the table below.
3. Take the numbers from the business listing, the website and the social pages, and mark each one landline or mobile.
4. Write every number in international format and remove repeats.
5. Screen the list against the calling rules and your own do-not-call list.
6. Work the list in call blocks of about an hour and log every outcome in one word.

## What is a business telemarketing list?

A consumer telemarketing list holds people at home. A business telemarketing list holds companies, reached at the numbers they publish so customers can contact them. A company publishes its number because it wants calls, so a polite, relevant business call is normal.

Three kinds of number appear on a business list:

- **The main line.** Reception answers, and will pass you on if you ask for a role rather than a name.
- **A direct line.** A number for one person, often printed on a website's team page.
- **A business mobile.** Owner-run firms publish a mobile for enquiries, and the owner often picks up.

A good list is not a file of random numbers bought by the thousand; it is a short, sorted set of businesses you chose on purpose. Our guide to the [cold calling list](/blog/cold-calling-list) covers the choice of businesses; this one covers the list itself.

## Which columns does a business call list need?

| Column | What goes in it | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business name | The name as the business writes it | To ask for the company by name on a shared line |
| Business type | Dental clinic, freight forwarder, estate agent | Sets which script the caller uses |
| Area and building | Deira, Al Ghurair Centre, 3rd floor | Gives a natural opener and a route for visits |
| Phone 1 and type | The main line, marked landline | The number most likely to still work |
| Phone 2 and type | A published mobile, marked mobile | Reaches the owner of a small firm |
| Contact and role | A name when published, otherwise "owner" | The caller asks for a role when there is no name |
| Website | The address, or "none" | One look before the call gives something to say |
| Time zone and best time | Gulf Standard Time, 10 to 12 | Keeps calls inside working hours |
| Outcome and date | No answer, callback, meeting | Shows what to do next |
| Do not call | A tick | Respected for good, across every campaign |

Keep one business per row: two numbers go in two columns, not two rows, or the same firm gets called twice in a morning.

## Where do the phone numbers come from?

Businesses publish their numbers in three places, and the best lists check all three.

1. **The business listing.** The city's map listings show the main line and sometimes a second number. Most businesses keep it up to date, because customers use it to book.
2. **The website.** The contact page and footer often carry a mobile for the owner or a WhatsApp number, as well as the main line.
3. **The social pages.** The about section of a Facebook page, an Instagram bio and a LinkedIn company page often show a number that is on neither the listing nor the website.

Record each number once, with its source and type. When the website and the listing disagree, trust the website. For more on these sources, read [how to find business phone numbers](/blog/find-business-phone-numbers).

## Is it a landline or a mobile? Formats by country

A dialler, a WhatsApp list and a do-not-call check all treat landlines and mobiles differently, so mark the type. The first digits usually tell you.

- **UAE.** Landlines start with the emirate code, 02 for Abu Dhabi, 04 for Dubai, 06 for Sharjah, followed by seven digits. Mobiles start 050, 052, 054, 055, 056 or 058. International form: +971 and drop the leading 0.
- **Saudi Arabia.** Landlines start 011 (Riyadh), 012 (Jeddah and Makkah), 013 (Eastern Province) and so on. Mobiles start 05. International form: +966 and drop the 0.
- **UK.** Landlines start 01 or 02 (020 for London, 0161 for Manchester). Mobiles start 07 and have eleven digits. International form: +44 and drop the 0.
- **USA.** A number is ten digits, and nothing in the format tells you whether it is a landline or a mobile. International form: +1 and the ten digits.
- **India.** Mobiles are ten digits starting 6, 7, 8 or 9. Landlines start with a 0 and a city code, 011 for Delhi, 022 for Mumbai. International form: +91 and drop the 0.

## What are the calling rules for business telemarketing?

Rules differ by country, and most are about who you may call, when, and what to do when someone says stop. In general words:

- **USA.** The TCPA covers calls and texts. Automated or recorded marketing calls need prior consent, so business callers dial by hand. The National Do Not Call Registry protects personal numbers, which matters when an owner uses a personal mobile for the business.
- **UK.** PECR governs marketing calls, and the ICO enforces it. Numbers on the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and the Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS) should not get unsolicited sales calls, so screen the list against both before you dial.
- **UAE.** At the time of writing, October 2026, the telemarketing rules expect calls within set daytime hours from lines registered to the company, a clear statement of who is calling and why, and no further calls to anyone who declines. The TDRA keeps a Do Not Call Register.
- **Australia.** The Do Not Call Register covers numbers used mainly for private purposes, and telemarketing calls are limited to set hours and days. Ordinary business lines are generally not on it, but a sole trader's mobile may be.

This is general information, not legal advice; check the current rules for the country you send to.

## How do you work the list in call blocks?

A call block is a fixed hour in which a caller dials and does nothing else. The caller gets into a rhythm and the list gets worked in order.

Take a worked example. Say you sell payroll software to accounting firms in Manchester and your list has 240 rows. One caller runs two blocks a day, 9:30 to 10:30 and 2:00 to 3:00. At about 25 dials a block, the list is worked once in five days. Say 6 in 25 dials reach the right person and 1 of those 6 books a meeting: that is 2 meetings a day from the same list.

1. **Sort the list** by time zone, then by area, so one block stays in one place.
2. **Set the block.** Phones only, no email, no CRM tidying.
3. **Dial in order.** No skipping rows that look hard.
4. **Log one word per call:** no answer, callback, not interested, meeting.
5. **Move callbacks to the top** of the next block, with the time the person asked for.
6. **Count at the end of the day:** dials, conversations, meetings.

## Where Rovero fits

Rovero is B2B lead generation software for Windows, and it builds the raw material for a business telemarketing list. You type a business type and a city, tick the areas, and Rovero searches them one by one. For each business it records the phone numbers from the listing, then checks the website and the Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages and keeps up to five extra mobile numbers the business publishes there, see [emails, mobiles and WhatsApp numbers](/rovero/features#emails-phones).

Each lead also carries the business type, the address with building and floor when known, the website and the rating, so the opener and the website column come filled in. When the list is ready, the [exports](/rovero/features#exports) give you a phone list ready to copy, or Excel and CSV with the columns you choose, and the WhatsApp list adds country codes and leaves landlines out.

One honest limit: details change over time, so check a number before an important campaign.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a business telemarketing list contain?

At least the business name, business type, area, a main line marked landline, any published mobile marked mobile, the website and an outcome column. Add a do-not-call column from day one, so an opt-out never lives only in someone's memory.

### Is a business telemarketing list legal to use?

Calling businesses at the numbers they publish is allowed in most countries, within rules on hours, identification and do-not-call registers such as the UK's TPS and CTPS and the US Do Not Call Registry. This is general information, not legal advice; check the current rules for the country you send to.

### How many rows should a telemarketing list have?

Enough for about a week of call blocks per caller, say 200 to 300 rows for one caller making 50 dials a day. A longer list goes stale before anyone reaches the end of it.

### Should I call the landline or the mobile first?

Call the main line first for companies with a reception, and the published mobile first for owner-run firms. If a mobile reaches someone who did not expect a business call, apologise and mark the row.

### How often should I refresh a business call list?

Rebuild or recheck it every three to six months, sooner for business types that move often, such as new restaurants. Keep the outcome and do-not-call columns when you refresh.

## Next step

Pick one business type and two areas, build a list of 100 rows with the columns above, and book a one-hour call block for tomorrow morning. When you want the numbers collected for you, area by area, see [what Rovero does](/rovero).
